The .3g2 file extension belongs exclusively to the new class multimedia files known as 3GPP2 files. The 3GPP ( 3rd Generation Partnership Project) and 3GPP2 ( 3rd Generation Partnership Project 2) were established as a means of creating worldwide standards for multimedia over 3rd generation mobile broadband networks. These standards allow delivery of .3g2 files to any 3rd generation mobile device without the need for proprietary software or codecs. The files can be music, videos, news feeds, broadband TV, or any other form of streaming multimedia, but they are most commonly movie files. Apple's Quicktime MPEG-4 format provided the base for deriving the .3g2 standards, and Quicktime 6.5 and later has support for these files.

The .3g2 file structure is divided into what are referred to as "boxes". Three boxes make up the top level of the file; the Filetype Box, the Movie Box, and the Media Data Box. The Filetype Box contains information regarding the specific type of multimedia and its properties. The Movie box is where the file's individual tracks are defined and mapped, and each track has its own box within the top level container. Finally, the Media Data Box contains the actual file data itself. This top level container may also have several different boxes within it.

This is similar to a standard audio CD wherein the user simply puts the disc in his player and goes. He is not aware that the files on the CD are in CDA format unless he inserts it into a computer and examines it as data. Users who do elect to move their .3g2 files to a computer will see the file extension and be able to open them with a few software products.
Apple's Quicktime player has full support of these files and runs on both Windows and Mac, while some Linux users have reported limited success with Quicktime Player. VLC media player has versions for all three platforms and reports support for .3g2 files. Windows media player can also open .3g2 files, but depending on what version is used and what updates have been applied to the computer, additional codecs might need to be installed.
